Information and Pictures of the summer 2006  trip to Nancy, France

Nancy/Cincinnati Sister City Relationship Anniversary Celebrated Through Art - "The Bond"  Sept 29 - Oct 11, 10 - 5 daily.

The Clay Alliance hosts seven ceramic artists from our Sister City of Nancy, France, for group exhibition and discovery of Cincinnati following travel to Nancy by a group of nine selected CA members. The trip in June centered on cultural exchange and a group exhibition at Maison de la Jeuness et de la Culture Pichon. During the second phase of cultural exchange, the French artists will live with Cincinnatians, visit galleries, artists studios and art/craft shows, as well as meet with local and visiting artists from Munich, Germany, another sister city, to discuss future art exchanges.

The Public Opening of "The Bond" is on Sept 29 from 3-5 pm and the display in the main showroom runs until October 11. The Krohn is open daily 10 am - 5 pm.

The participating Clay Alliance artists for "The Bond" are: Terri Kern, Louise Jenks, Brenda Tarbell, Joyce Clancy, Alain Nairn, Larry Watson, Rhonda Gushee, Yuki Muroe, Nancy Ache.

Exhibition curators: Jane Black Goepper, Suzanne Lambert, Philippe Pasqualini

Clay Alliance Artworks to be featured at the Krohn Conservatory's "Alpine Garden" Show, Sept 15 - Oct 29.

The Krohn Conservatory's main showroom autumn display, "Alpine Gardens," will feature dozens of larger scale ceramic artworks, in complement to the exhibition from Nancy-Cincinnati ceramics exchange, displayed in the Krohn's adjacent Bonsai Gallery.

The Alpine Gardens show will feature plants common to rocky, cool mountain environments in settings that range from an alpine cottage and garden, to a public square, and into a more wildish, magical woodlands. Many works are traditional and useful, while others are decorative and inventive. The artists collaborated to make works that harmonized with the theme, and with each other. The centerpiece fountain is a first-time collaboration among three artists and the Park Board staff. The resulting experience will tug at the memories of travelers to Germany's Bavarian region.

The Public Opening of "Alpine Gardens" is on Sept 16 and the display in the main showroom runs until October 30. The Krohn is open daily 10 am - 5 pm.

The participating Clay Alliance artists for "Alpine Gardens" show are:
Exhibition curator and guest artistic director: Jan Brown Checco
Thematic works in the main showroom: Mike and Karen Baum, Cathy Gatch, Jancy Jaslow, Char Iliff, Sandy Manteuffel, Calvin Hubbell, Gwen Briscoe, Sue Cline, Sandy Gantzer, Suzanne Fisher, Larry Watson, David Mill, Lisa Conner, Brenda Tarbell, Joyce Clancy, Jane Goepper, Kate Marcillla and the Friends of Krohn and Dode Shepherd.

“A Change of Perspective” Sept 29 - Nov 29; Tues - Fri 11-5, Sat 11 - 4.

At the same time as the Krohn Conservatory ceramics exhibition, a group of international artists from another Sister City - Munich, Germany - will visit Cincinnati. They are participants of an art exchange project led in 2005 by Cincinnati artist Jan Brown Checco and her Munich artist partner, Traude Linhardt. "A Change in Perspective" is an exhibition of 180 drawings created by two groups of nine artists from each city. The concept was fascinating: each one of the artists created an original drawing that had no constraints other than the 8" x 11" size. Each drawing was copied nine times, and each project artist received a portfolio of copies of the other city's nine different drawings. The quest: each artist takes the nine different copies of original drawings and creates nine completely new drawings.

Jan Brown Checco says, "This project was so interesting. It really pushed the participants to think about the other person's intentions, and then to take a risk in modifying the original artwork. Would we offend? Be harshly judged? Trust was the key operative. The different perspectives on what a drawing can be, respect for another's viewpoint, and the conditions of being in control (or not in control) were made very clear. We are very happy to be engaged in this kind of dialogue with our peers in other cities, especially at a time when trusting, frank and sustained communication is clearly a lifeline to survival."

The nine participating Cincinnati artists are Terri Kern, Suzanne Fisher, Gary Gaffney, Saad Ghosn, Matt Reed, Halena Cline, Kurt Nicaise, Katie Swartz and Jan Brown Checco. Sponsors of the exchange activities include the the City of Munich and its Cultural Arts Department, Amerikahaus gallery, Cincinnati Park Board, the Munich Sister City Association, Nancy Sister City Committee, and the Clay Alliance. A catalogue of the drawing project will be available at the DAAP Galleries on Sycamore during the run of the project from September 29 - November 29.

LE LIEN, THE BOND

In order to celebrate the fifteen years of the sister-city relationship between the cities of Cincinnati, Ohio and Nancy, France the members of the Cincinnati-Nancy Sister City Association) wanted to find a special, reciprocal project in which people from both cities could participate. As some of us are also artists, either in clay or in other media, we elected to create a cultural exchange involving artists in both cities. When the concept was presented to the Clay Alliance of Cincinnati as well as the CNSCA, the members responded enthusiastically and thus the exchange involving clay artists came to be.

The Clay Alliance participated in a juried show for its members in the Carnegie Center in Covington, Kentucky in November and December 2005. Philippe Pasqualini and Suzanne Lambert from the CNSCA and who are not Clay Alliance members juried the group of artists participating in that show. They selected ten artists whose works would then be included in a joint show with seven clay sculptors from Nancy, France. As there were more than fifty artists in the Carnegie Show, this was a difficult task, particularly given the high level of skill and artistic ability demonstrated.

Jane Black Goepper, Suzanne Lambert and Philippe Pasqualini served as curators for these joint expositions.

In order to showcase the abilities of Cincinnati area artists in other media such as stone sculpture, painting, clay sculpture and photography, it was decided to select five other artists’ works for a parallel show in Nancy.

The ten Clay Alliance artists shipped their works to Nancy, France in late May for the joint show with the seven clay sculptors and with the additional Cincinnati artists in the parallel show. The Nancy show was held at the Maison de la Jeunesse et de la Culture Pichon in Nancy. The show opened June 18 and ran through July 8, 2006.

From September 16 through October 11, 2006, the Clay Alliance artists and five artists from Nancy will all have works in the reciprocal exposition to be held in the Bonsai Room of the Krohn Conservatory in Eden Park in Cincinnati. The artists’ works will be available for sale through the Krohn Conservatory’s shop. There will be demonstrations and hands-on workshops for the general public throughout the duration of the show.

During the one-week stay in Cincinnati for the French artists, it is anticipated that the French artists will visit the studios of some of the Clay Alliance artists as well as visiting several galleries in the area. In addition, they will visit the Hyde Park Art Show.

Home stays will be provided either by the local artists themselves or by other host families from the Cincinnati-Nancy Sister City Association. While in France the American artists stayed in the homes of the French artists.

In Nancy excursions the American artists visited the Musée de l’École de Nancy and the Musée des Beaux Arts. They enjoyed sitting on the Place Stanislas where they could take breakfast or lunch or sip a refreshing beverage. There was a reception at the Mairie followed by a special concert by a group of musicians from Nancy. In addition there was a public reception to officially open the exhibit and to officially re-sign the Sister Cities Agreement.

In Cincinnati excursions are proposed to the Cincinnati Art Museum, the Taft Museum, Fountain Square, the Freedom Center and other cultural sites of interest. There will also be a private reception with members of the CNSCA and the CA as well as a public reception to mark the opening of the exhibit.
The vision of the sister cities programs is to foster understanding among different cultures which will lead to the development of a world consciousness that can only be created through one on one relationships and spreading this consciousness throughout the community. Bringing together these artists from the two cities will lead to future artistic exchanges and link the artists in creative relationships. In addition this exchange will provide an exciting cultural celebration for the fifteenth anniversary and will lead to strengthening and expansion of the sister-city relationship.
